Flying Motorcycles Concepts and Realities – Who Needs Wheels?

Flying Motorcycles Concepts and Realities
Dubai Police are taking to the skies to catch criminals using a flying motorbike.

Nothing matches the freedom of riding your motorcycle down the highway and feeling like you are flying, except for actual flying that is. What some of you may not know is that flying motorcycles actually exist in various stages and yes, they are every bit as awesome as they sound.

Now even though many people refer to these as “flying motorcycles” obviously they aren’t exactly motorcycles, but for many of these vehicles you are sitting in the same position, so it feels like a cycle that is flying.

Many of these machines are based on current hoverboard technology. Ever since we saw Marty McFly riding a hoverboard in Back To The Future II, we have all dreamed of flying around on our own hoverboard. For the moment, even the best hoverboard that you can buy still has two wheels. But that’s okay because hoverboards like motorcycles are headed to the sky.

Let’s take a look at some of these futuristic vehicles and dream about the day when we can take a ride in the sky. Can you even imagine how amazing a ride like that would be? If we are lucky, one day we may find out.

The BMW Flying Motorcycle Concept / Hover Bike

The BMW R1000 GS Hover Bike Concept looks pretty promising and we are hoping that one day we will see it in action. They also worked with LEGO to create the R 1200 GS Adventure in LEGO Technic form. You have to love the futuristic design here that’s based on BMW elements. This is such a beautiful design but for now just a concept. Hopefully one day it can be made a reality.

The Dubai Police flying motorbike

Dubai Police are taking to the skies to catch criminals using a flying motorbike. This futuristic vehicle is called the Scorpion and was designed by Russian tech company Hoversurf. It uses four propellers and is capable of 40 mph. it will give the rider a travel time of 25 minutes and can carry 600 lbs. It can even operate autonomously without a pilot. Good luck getting away from the police now.

The Zaxon Tactical Vehicle

The idea for this futuristic flying bike was born from Franky Zapata’s Flyboard hoverboard and wondering what might come next. This vehicle would be the size of a standard touring motorcycle. A  single-seater with two larger engines in front, and two smaller ones in back so that jets can tilt for liftoff, landing, or flying. A large fuel tank would sit inside the bike.

The Zaxon could drop from a plane and power up during the freefall, then come in a for a low-speed landing. This idea is pretty impressive and I have no doubt that we will see it turned into a reality one day soon.

The Kitty Hawk

The “flying motor bike” Kitty Hawk is named after the North Carolina town where the Wright Brothers built their famous aircraft, The prototype first took flight back in 2017, but on June 6, 2018, Kitty Hawk published a video with a production version that had everyone talking.

This recreational vehicle is lifted by 10 electrically-driven props and has large pontoons instead of typical landing gear. It boasts a top speed of just 20 miles per hour, and altitude caps out at just 10 feet. They want to keep things safe with this flyer.  At max speed, it can fly 12 to 20 minutes before it needs a recharge.

And these are just some of the “flying motorcycles” that are either in development or about to hit the market. It is going to be amazing to see what kind of vehicles are in our skies in the near future.

I’m waiting for a motorcycle that can take off and then become a motorcycle again.
