
Superbike rider Nicky Hayden has died after being hit by a car while cycling five days ago.
The former MotoGP champion passed away at 7.09pm local time in Cesena, Italy succumbing to his injuries which left him in a critical condition with severe head and chest injuries.
Hayden was training on his bicycle along the Adriatic Coast near the Imola track when he was struck by the car shattering the windscreen.
He was taken to a local hospital and put into intensive but doctors said he had suffered serious brain damage.
When he passed he was surrounded by his fiancée, mother and brother.
The American previously raced for Honda and Ducati winning the 2006 MotoGP World Championships moving to the Superbike World Championship last year.
His last race in Australia was at Phillip Island in October.
